rhinoplasty 3

Having a rhinoplasty is an important step towards making the facial appearance harmonious and attractive. However, for the best results, the recovery process is just as important as the other stages. For people who exercise regularly and have a routine, when to return to normal after rhinoplasty surgery is an important issue and can be a concern for some people. While active exercise is essential for a healthy body and life, it is important for health to know the timeline of the recovery phase to avoid complications after surgery and to ensure maximum recovery.

Prioritize Recovery and Be Patient

The first thing to do in the first month after rhinoplasty is to allow the operated area of your face to heal by giving priority to resting your body. Physical activities during this period, you should maintain your effort in the active times of daily life and take care to move minimally. However, short, light walks can be done during this period. Walking at a light pace increases blood circulation without stressing the body. Thus, it reduces the risk by controlling complications such as fluid accumulation and skin bleeding.

Exhausting or straining yourself unnecessarily after rhinoplasty can damage the surgical site. Being in a hurry and straining the body too much in the first month can lead to potential swelling, bruising, delayed healing and even permanent scars.

Controlled Resumption of Activity

By the end of the first month, depending on the state of recovery, most people can start to return to their activities. However, care should be taken to ensure that this return is controlled and gradual. Light exercise without heavy lifting or strain can usually be resumed after 4 weeks. For example, activities such as light stretching, yoga or low-paced exercises are usually preferable.

Remember, we cannot talk about a complete recovery during this time. Exercises that increase blood pressure, increase pressure in the nasal area or significantly strain the body should be avoided. At the end of the first month, the incisions continue to heal and excessive pressure can damage the delicate tissue, making the scars permanent or delaying healing.

Return to Normal Activities

Approximately six weeks after surgery, people who are recovering well are assessed according to their general health and the procedures they have received. If appropriate, they can return to their regular exercise routine. However, the transition process is not the same for everyone. Some people may need to continue with lower intensity exercises.

During this time, it is important to listen to the body’s wishes and not push it too hard, especially during heavy lifting or high-intensity training. The risk of subcutaneous bleeding and scarring will decrease significantly after six weeks. However, the body may still be adjusting to the changes and excessive movement and exertion may cause regression and negatively affect recovery.

Best Exercises for the Recovery Process

It is important to make sure that the physical activities planned after rhinoplasty will not jeopardize the healing process. At this stage, the best exercises that will not negatively affect the healing process and even support the healing process can be listed as follows:

  1. Light Brisk Walking
Walking is the safest and most recommended exercise after rhinoplasty. Light brisk walking improves blood circulation and reduces the risk of blood clots. Generally, short walks can be started in the first few days after the surgery as instructed by the surgeon. You can start with short, light walks.
  2. Stretching Exercises
Light stretching exercises will help the body to maintain its flexibility and control stress. Light stretching can be started from about 2-3 weeks. Choose movements that do not involve the facial muscles and nasal tissues, do not cause pressure and are not strenuous.
  3. Low Impact Aerobics
Low-impact aerobic exercises such as using a stationary bike or elliptical can be done after 4-6 weeks. Cardio can be done avoiding movements that jolt the body and face. It also helps to feel better by increasing energy levels.
  4. Yoga
Yoga promotes relaxation by improving body flexibility. It improves blood circulation and helps reduce stress. However, positions that involve bending forward or tilting the head, which can increase blood pressure and swelling, should be avoided. Approximately 4 weeks after surgery, modified yoga can be started in a controlled manner.
  5. Light Resistance Training
Light resistance exercises help to maintain muscle strength and keep people fit. Light weights or resistance bands can be used for exercises targeting the lower body, arms and back. Resistance training should be started at least 6 weeks after surgery. It should be approached with caution and the intensity should be increased gradually.
